A Response to Stephen Hawking on Discovery Channel

I just finished watching a program on the Discovery Channel about whether or not God created the universe. The program was hosted by Stephen Hawking and his final word on the issue was that there is no reason to believe in God because science explains everything.

Stephen believes that the universe was created by the big bang. He explained that protons can appear and disappear from nothing. Apparently because protons can appear from nothing, that means that one proton could have appeared and expanded into the entire universe. The issue I have with this theory is that we don’t even see protons today that expand to the size of a golf ball much less the size of an entire universe that supports life.

I was very sad to hear what Stephen Hawking had to say. He basically said that because science can explain how the universe works that means that there is no need for God and therefore he does not exist.

God has given us a great gift in showing us how his universe works. Early on in the program, Hawking said that the universe is governed by laws and principals. He is absolutley correct…and God is the one who created and implemented those principals and laws. We are able to understand how things work in our world because God has given us the ablility to use science. He allows us to uncover the secrets of our universe and by doing that he allows us to grow in our knowledge of our surroundings and in our knowledge of him as an amazing God.

In my own mind it is much easier to believe that God created the universe than to believe that one little proton expanded into our entire universe. It also makes me sad that we use a gift that God gives us like science to disprove his existance. Science opens our eyes to see just how much we don’t know and how big God really is.

The creation cannot disprove the Creator.
